Background
Systems integration is an area of emerging interest across the energy sector but the breadth of the topic and interdisciplinary nature of the research leave many wondering what it’s all about and the research approaches it entails. Our facilitator-led workshop will give each attendee the opportunity to discuss a range of issues while also competing for a group prize.
On the afternoon of Wednesday October 8th, PhD students from the Electricity Research Centre are hosting a workshop on Energy Systems Integration (ESI). The workshop will run for 2 hours from 3.45pm to 5.45pm, based in the William Jefferson Clinton Auditorium, located beside UCD Engineering. Directly following the workshop, at 6pm, an open seminar is being presented by Prof William D’haeseleer from KU Leuven on “System effects challenging the European energy market”. The timing is such that both events can be attended with time for some refreshments between them. These events are being held in conjunction with the annual ERC SEES Research symposium which takes place the following day, more details here.
Workshop format
Attendees will be pre-assigned to groups. Each group will discuss each topic with the designated topic facilitator. Half of the topics require a unique response from each group. These responses will all be posted on notice boards at the end of the group session. Attendees will be given the opportunity to review all posters and balloted individually on the best submission. The remaining topics lend themselves to an evolving discussion with successive groups. These topics will be quickly summarised via PowerPoint slides immediately prior to the voting and results announcement.

Workshop Topics
- How our research answers system integration problems or raises more questions. Are the solutions academic or do they have real world applications?
- Do the simplifications required when studying systems integration allow for real world solutions? Examples from group members’ work of important issues which are at risk of being assumed away. *
- Is system integration research predicated on the ability to process large amounts of data and does that data even exist?
- Based on the expertise of the group, propose a systems integration collaborative project *
- Can a single researcher do a system integration project without collaboration?
- What research support structures would be required for an effective, collaborative PhD? *
- Why is Engineering a good/bad background for a Systems Integration Researcher? *
- Do the roles of PhD student, Post Doc and Supervisor need to change in the SI paradigm?
* Indicates that poster boards will be used as the report back format of this topic.
Registration
All interested post graduates, researchers and academics are invited to attend. Places are limited and can be reserved by emailing energysystemintegration@gmail.com by Monday 6th of October at 5pm. Attendees are also invited to include their project title or other summary information so as to facilitate group assignment.
